1. It's amazing to see India's leading Design Genius to move ahead from the ramp and take his art to another level. How do you feel about this initiative and how did you get started on it?
BAL: When the opportunity of wedding planning presented itself to me I looked at it as an endeavor worth undertaking as it was a mutual symbiosis of two great minds - my aesthetics and work over the time and J&S events with their vast experience of managing and executing events all around the world over the past 20 years. Also, all of us have been friends for a while and I believe when two creative minds meet, beautiful things are manifested. The company Rohit Bal Luxury Weddings and Events was thus set up in December 2013.
2. The weddings and events venture looks gorgeous. But we all know how much effort and planning goes into it. Could you tell us how you intend to take it forward with modern innovations?
BAL: At RBLWE getting to know the couple and their memories and transposing it to be intertwined within their day is what we consider to be our style. We are definitely good at design but it is a matter of taking what we know about the couple and designing something remarkable that has their name all over it. We want everything to have timeless elegance and futuristic outlook so when people envision the weddings they see opulence but a quiet opulence.
3. How far reaching is this exclusive service. Is it available only in India or destination wedding locations abroad as well?
BAL: We are a 360 degree company that provides all the services as well as all the designs. So far we have successfully done 5 wedding events in India in the span of one year but we definitely are upbeat about doing destination weddings abroad as well as we have excellent alliances with leading event and wedding planners in countries like Thailand, Dubai, Turkey, France and Germany. I would say that even though our aesthetics are grounded in South Asia we are looking at the rest of the world.
4. To make it personalized, would it mean that the client would get an opportunity to meet you in person? How is the relation taken ahead from the first call made to the full service granted?
BAL: It usually starts with meeting with the client and then perhaps deciding on a location. We have some ideas and the clients have some but it is all just a matter of meeting somewhere in the middle considering their choice and our ideas. It is basically about bringing out our expertise of aesthetics keeping in mind the choice of the client and because these are made-to-order weddings, we create exclusive sets and ideas for our clients.
For example, for the sangeet cocktail of Mr and Mrs.Sahni’s son, we were inspired by 18th century French gardens. However, the challenge was bringing this idea into an enclosed space, which in this case was a farmhouse. We built an entire structure, which included a beautiful cream-colored façade, which was European. We also had huge walls all running fresh green leaves and chandeliers with hanging flowers and ivy and basically everything that would create a French garden feel inside.
5. This venture is time-consuming and must be keeping you on your toes. Would this mean we will see Rohit Bal a little lesser at fashion weeks? How do you balance your time and priorities?BAL: Yes, I do keep myself very busy. However, I have very talented and competent people working with me and this helps me balance out my time between planning weddings and setting up fashion shows. Overall it does tend to get hectic at times but a fast paced and energetic environment is what I thrive in so I have no complaints.
