'I am envious of Mumbai's fashion people': Sunil Sethi, FDCI

Delhi is the fashion capital of India...In just the way Mumbai is an unbeaten Financial Capital

The year 2010 has come to an end and as the New Year begins on a hopeful note, there's a great bit of enthusiasm that Delhi's fashion heads are holding within. Mumbai's pride Lakme Fashion Week is brimming with new 'technologically-advanced' plans as well, but are all ears to Delhi's news...straight from the horse's mouth - Sunil Sethi, President, Fashion Design Council of India. So, here goes:

According to Sunil Sethi, who I think is a fabulously gifted business management expert, Delhi's got what it takes. Mumbai's not far behind either. In just the way Mumbai is known and established as the Financial capital of India, Delhi remains the undisputed Fashion capital of our country. Be it bling, couture, pret or craft-based design. "But then I am quite envious of people in Mumbai who are able to manage fashion events and are also good with the media. Well, don't get mislead by this, come to Delhi and see for yourself, what edge we got. Till then, don't get judgemental."

In 2011, "I am confident that Delhi this year will acknowledge many young designers from across the country, including Masaba Gupta, Rahul Mishra, Anand Kabra, Pankaj and Nidhi, Gaurav Gupta and Nikasha Tawadey amongst others, and give them the position they deserve. People who buy fashionable stuff no longer bother about where the designer originates from. Product is the king," says Sethi.

Talking about FDCI's plans ahead, he said, they are international, quite literally. "We have already shortlisted over 10 names, who will be participating in Paris, Japan and other markets with FDCI's help. Design houses need to promote this talent. It's the need of the day.
The board's initiative is also to reach the masses. In just the way the FDCI help promote handcrafts for the Ministry of Textiles in Chennai in December 2010. Celebrated designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee showcased in Chennai for the very first time. And you know what, he made instant business.

Girl with the blue scarf says: Come on! Mumbai. If fashion platforms need to make sense, then they'd better sustain themselves. Buyers are an integral part of any fashion week. When designer pay to participate in the fashion week, there's reason why they should make business at the end of the day. What do you think?

Sunil Sethi's comments are accurate in a way. There's also rumour that Lakme Fashion Week young patron designers have boycotted Mumbai borders and gone on to showcase at Wills India Fashion Week in Delhi instead. Is that true?
